Walter E. 'Gene' Hunter of DeSoto died Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Walter "Gene" Hunter, 63, of De Soto died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 in his home. Gene was retired from the United States Air Force in 1992 and served during the Vietnam War and in the Persian Gulf War. He enjoyed working on model trains, restoring his 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor, working on the farm with Dwight, playing solitaire on his computer, and playing with his grandchildren. He also served as President of the Viroqua branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Gene loved his family and his church with his whole heart. Gene graduated from high school in 1965 from Benson Polytechnic School in Portland, Oregon. He then joined the United States Air Force in 1966. In 1974 he married Betty, the love of his life, in Hurlburt Field, Florida.Gene is survived by his wife Betty (Veglahn); children Shon (Tracey) Hunter, Chad Hunter, Eric (Judy) Hunter, Jennifer (Jon) Lewis; grandchildren Chad (Chaddy Boy), Robert, Payton, Elizabeth; brother Carl (Peggy) Hunter; sisters-in-law Shirley Veglahn, Rita (Paul) Magnuson; brothers-in-law Jerry (Kathy) Veglahn, Dwight (Patty) Veglahn; mother-in-law Beverly Veglahn; and cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Dorothea Geraldine (Stewart) Hunter; grandchild Cassidy; father-in-law Ervin Veglahn; special son Robert Nevill-Neil; and aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 701 Well St in Onalaska. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 320 Main St, in De Soto and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In Lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to the church.The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of De Soto is serving the family.
