Wayne H. Getter

Wayne H. Getter, age 80, of Viroqua, died Monday, February 7, 2011 . Wayne H. Getter of Viroqua passed away on Monday, February 7, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital.Wayne was born in Vernon County on April 1st, 1930. He attended Bishop Branch Elementary School and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1947. Following high school, Wayne worked several odd jobs including painting highline towers. Wayne was united in marriage to Charlotte A. Novachek on December 27th, 1951. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the United States Army and spent two years of service in Germany. After returning from Germany, Wayne began his 39 year career at the Viroqua Telephone Company, retiring as plant superintendent in 1991.Throughout his life and during retirement, Wayne had many passions. At the front of the list was his love of flying. Wayne earned his private pilot license and enjoyed flying his Piper Cub. Wayne also enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many weekends with his family at his cabin on Pigeon Lake near Cable, Wisconsin. Never one to sit still, Wayne also farmed for many years, raising cattle and crops in his "spare time". Wayne enjoyed traveling, especially to see his children and grandsons. Later in life, Wayne enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and wild pheasants that came into the yard. Wayne had many good friends and was known to love a good game of cards.Wayne took great pride in being able to fix anything and he was always available to help family and friends.Wayne is survived by Charlotte, his beloved wife of 59 years; his daughter Teresa (Ed) Venner of Neenah, Wisconsin and his son James (Tina) Getter of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandson Thomas Venner and grandson Anthony James (AJ) Getter.Wayne is survived by siblings Evelyn (Carroll) Kepler of Yuba, Norman (Donna) Getter of Viroqua and Laverne (Phyllis) Getter of Harrison, Wisconsin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.In Lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Marys Catholic Church or the American Heart Association A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Viroqua. Father John Parr will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker Street, (Hwy. 56) in Viroqua and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
