Wayne Otto Ewers

September 9, 1934 — August 10, 2024

Wayne Otto Ewers, age 89, of Viroqua and formerly of Soldiers Grove, passed away August 10, 2024, at Creamery Creek Assisted Living in Viroqua. He was born to Clyde and Martha (Hagenson) Ewers on September 9, 1934, in North Clayton, rural Soldiers Grove. Wayne graduated from Soldiers Grove High School in 1952. Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Wanless, on Valentine’s Day in 1954, at the North Clayton Methodist Church.

Wayne enjoyed farming until he was diagnosed with Farmer’s Lung, then he became an insurance salesman for Bankers Life and Casualty and Wisconsin Insurance Center. He also worked at Wisconsin Dairies and the local apple orchards. Wayne was very active in his church, serving as a lay leader and singing in the choir. He further served on the Crawford Electric Cooperative Board and Dairyland Power Board for several years.

Wayne and Joyce enjoyed bowling, 500 card club, attending musical performances at the Temple Theatre, and traveling. He also enjoyed playing cards, attending basketball games and other sporting events, hunting, cutting wood, helping on the farm, and being outside. Wayne would be found researching the family history and reminiscing, but what he loved the most were family gatherings and hearing about the farm and his grandkids’ robotics and sporting events. Wayne was an avid Green Bay Packer, Milwaukee Brewer, and UW Badger fan.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joyce; his daughter, Sandra (Ken) Davidson of Readstown; his son, David (Marie) Ewers of Goodyear, AZ; granddaughters, Heidi Davidson of Soldiers Grove and Heather (Chad) Christianson of Cashton; grandson, Ryan (Marina) Ewers of Buckeye, AZ; great-grandsons, Alden Christianson and Olen Christianson of Cashton; nephews: Wesley Phillips of Cuba City, Bernard Fritz (Pat Stewart) of Eagan, MN, and Jeff (Ginny) Fritz of Bruce, WI; and many more relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Lester and Lucille (Ewing) Wanless; sisters, Delma (Ross) Phillips and Norma (Bernard) Fritz; and niece, Bonnie (Phillips) Campbell.

Wayne’s family would like to thank everyone at VMH, Creamery Creek, and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent care.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Soldiers Grove Methodist Church. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Wayne will be laid to rest at North Clayton Cemetery following a luncheon at the church.
