Wesley Slack

Wesley Clayton Slack, 95, of Westby died Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua. He was born August 31, 1922 on the home dairy farm in Vernon County to Ray F. and Christine Louise (Kolstad) Slack. Wesley farmed side by side with his father. They were one of the first in the area to integrate contour farming and crop rotation. He married Audrey Volden Slack on February 11, 1948 in Viroqua, WI and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. They dairy farmed together in rural Viroqua for thirty-seven years. He continued to improve the family business by furthering his agricultural education and utilizing innovative techniques on the farm. He was proclaimed the Vernon county Corn Growing Champion in February of 1956. Upon retirement, they resided in Westby, WI. He enjoyed fishing, music, a good polka, and his family. He was a lifetime member of Kickapoo United Lutheran Church and faithfully served in many capacities, including the church council. Preceding him in death are his parents, his step-mother Vera, his wife, and two sisters: Adelaide Farr Gardner and Ruth Gardner. He is survived by his four children: Eileen (Philip) Batchelor of Rockford, IL, Roger (Geralyn) Slack of Stoughton, WI, Gary (Diana) Slack of Viroqua, WI and Lora (Bryan) Brown of Darlington, WI. He was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. He is also survived by two sister-in-laws: Donna Saugstad of La Crosse, WI and Gloria Kraabel of Ham Lake, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Feltes and all of the supporting staff at the clinic, as well as the wonderful care staff at Vernon Manor. Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church. Pastor Chuck Miller will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery following a luncheon. Friends may call on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from 4-7pm at the Vosseteig Funeral Home (708 S Main St/HWY 14) in Westby. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10am till the time of service at 11.
