Howard D. Volden, age 72 of Westby, Wis., died on Thursday, March 17, 2005 Howard D. Volden, age 72 of Westby, Wis., died on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. Howard was born on July 27, 1932 to Hjalmer and Palma Volden. He was united in marriage to Doris (Volden) Bakkestuen on April 28, 1978. He was a life member of the Westby V.F.W. Post 8021, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #37 of Vernon County, and a member of the Westby Legion Post #155. He had been commander of both the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. At the age of 18, Howard enlisted in the Army and served his country for 9 years. He worked several years as a construction worker in the Janesville area. Howard always worked very hard until his illnesses took the strength away from him. Howard loved the animals and birds and all wildlife. He just absolutely had to have cob corn for the squirrels and birdseed for the birds. Even when we were to be gone to the hospital, he would tell our oldest son Arvid to be sure to go down and put out corn for the squirrels. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Palma Volden; one brother, Donald; infant brother, Lester; two sisters, Lois (Loren) Oliver and Lillian (Martin) Willger, and step-son, Jon. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Doris "Babes"; 4 step-sons: Arvid Bakkestuen Sr. of Westby, WI, Mike (Laurie) Bakkestuen of Lone Rock, WI, Kenneth (Cathy) Bakkestuen of Amery, WI, and Randy (Cindy) Bakkestuen of Westby, WI; 4 step-daughters: Elaine (Odie) Odemoe of Onalaska, WI, Gloria (Alton) Brose of Viroqua, WI, Lola (Don) Hinson of Eau Claire, WI, and Sheila (Richard) Steele of Marshfield, WI; 28 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Joel (Loretta) Volden of Viroqua, WI, Gary Volden of Viroqua, WI, and Robert (Joy) Volden of Westby, WI; 2 sisters: Barbara (Kenneth) Nyhus of Janesville, WI, and Debbie (Howard) Keenlance of Viroqua, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
