William "Bill" D. Gilman

January 24, 1934 — February 10, 2022

William D. “Bill” Gilman, 88, of La Farge, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022, at Bethel Oaks Memory Care in Viroqua. Bill was born in rural La Farge on January 24, 1934, to Earl and Mae (DeLap) Gilman. He married Irma Steinmetz on July 9, 1954, in Junction City, Kansas. Bill attended Fairview School in rural La Farge and at the age of 18 hitchhiked to La Crosse and joined the Army. He was a proud veteran, having served in the Korean War. After his 8 years of military service, Bill and Irma returned to La Farge with their two young daughters. Bill was employed at Harvey’s Market and Locker Plant, and later he and Irma purchased the business. After selling the locker plant, Bill enjoyed a few years working in home construction. Bill and Irma then purchased and operated the Village Market until retirement. He was a hard worker, almost to a fault. Bill was a member of the La Farge VFW, La Farge Fire Department and had served on the Housing Committee with the Village of La Farge. He loved a mean game of euchre, a cribbage game, and watching Wheel of Fortune (“The Wheel” as he called it). He was a true Norwegian and enjoyed attending lutefisk and lefse dinners with his group of friends. He is survived by two daughters, Debra Korus of La Farge and Gail (Michael) Semb of La Crosse. He is further survived by grandchildren: Jeffery (Elizabeth) Korus, Jasmine Korus, Collin Semb, and Connor Semb and great-grandchildren: William, Lyla, and Jack Korus. He is also survived by his siblings: Iva Lea McCollough, Valdo “Pete” (Shirley) Gilman, and Sharon Drew. He was preceded in death by Irma, his wife of 65 years; infant twin sons, David and Dean; his parents; siblings, Earl Gilman Jr, Virgil Gilman, Shirley Marshall, DeAnna Johnson; and infant twin sisters, Rita and Rae Gilman. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. DeLine for his exceptional care the past several years, the staff at the La Farge Medical Clinic, and the staff at Bethel Oaks, Bethel Home and Vernon Manor where he had temporarily resided in recent months. A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the La Farge Free Methodist Church. Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to La Farge Veterans Memorial, La Farge Fire Department, or a charity of your choice. Vosseteig Funeral Home & Crematory in La Farge is serving Bill's family. 203 N. State Street La Farge, WI 54639 608-625-4244
