William “Willie” A. Crook, age 90, of Readstown, passed away at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Monday, May 20, 2024, with his loving wife of nearly 64 years by his side. He was born April 17th,1934, in Vernon County to Fred and Edith (Ward) Crook. Willie attended and graduated from Readstown High School. After a brief stint in California, he worked on the Mississippi Valley barge line and bridge construction. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served for two years as a mechanic’s helper. Following his military service, Willie went back to work on the barge. Willie married Betty Phillips on July 30, 1960. Shortly after their marriage, Willie began working for Janesville Construction, where he helped build bridges until his retirement at the age of 66. He enjoyed working in the garden, birds, woodworking, and found enjoyment in giving away things that he made.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Mark (Patricia) Crook, Drew (Dena) Crook; his grandchildren, Chanda Borck, Duncan Crook, and Danica Crook, two step-granddaughters, Cheyenne, and Kayla Raymond; his great-grandchildren, Monica (Tyler Brown) Crook, Kelli Hirschfield, Charity Raymond, and Lyanna Borck; his sisters, Doris Thompson, Jeannie (Clarence) Callies, and Lynn Farrel; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Clyde Crook, Betty (Ray) Hollenbech, Gerald Crook, Dorothy “Rusty” (Robert) Rein, Fred “Boze” (Vivian) Crook, and Patricia Dobbs; and other extend family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to any veteran’s organization of your choosing are appreciated.
A Funeral Service for Willie will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Sime Funeral Home in Readstown. Visitation will he held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Readstown Cemetery. A reception will take place at Sime Funeral Home following the graveside service.
